งูกาบหมากหางนิลเหนือ / Helfenberger’s Beauty Snake (Elaphe taeniura helfenbergeri)
งูที่มักใช้ชีวิตอยู่ในถ้ำ มีลำตัวที่ยาว 120 – 180 เซนติเมตร ส่วนหัวมีสีเทาอมฟ้า มีแถบสีดำพาดที่ตาถึงหลังหัว ไล่ลงมามีสีน้ำตาล ครึ่งตัวหลังมีสีดำพร้อมแถบสีขาวอมเหลืองพาดตรงกลางตัว ในชนิดย่อยมีความแตกต่างของลวดลายบนตัวและสถานที่พบ งูกาบหมากหางนิลเหนือพบได้จากภาคตะวันตกและเหนือของไทย จนถึงพม่า
งูชนิดนี้กินสัตว์เลี้ยงลูกด้วยนมขนาดเล็ก สามารถไต่ตามผนังและล่าค้างคาวในถ้ำเป็นอาหาร และเป็นงูที่มีสถานะ สิ่งมีชีวิตที่มีแนวโน้มใกล้สูญพันธุ์ (VU – Vulnerable species) ที่มีจำนวนลดลงเรื่อย ๆ
Dwellers of caves, this species Beauty snake shows very fascinating body patterns and colors. They can grow up to 1.2 to 1.8 meter in length. The differentiation from their close relatives from south Thailand, E. taeniura spp. ridleyi, is from their upper half body pattern.
Their diets usually consists of small mammals like bats, therefore they are specialist in climbing on cave’s wall. Also, the population status of Beauty snake are considered vulnerable-VU, And the number is still decreasing.
